Daniel Ashby, M.S., FASHP

Daniel M. Ashby is senior director of pharmacy for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mr. Ashby's current faculty appointments include those at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Mr. Ashby received his Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy Administration and his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degrees from Wayne State University.

A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Ashby began his career at Grace Hospital in Detroit as a pharmacist assigned to critical care. In 1972, he became the coordinator of drug information services, and in 1974, he was promoted to assistant director. Mr. Ashby continued his career as associate director of pharmacy at Harper Hospital, and in 1981, he was promoted to director of pharmacy. While in Michigan, Mr. Ashby served as an original member of the task force that wrote the Pharmacy Certified Technician examination and training manual and served as a member of the Michigan Pharmacy Certified Technician Board of Examiners.

From January 1991 to January 1999, Mr. Ashby served as the director of pharmacy at Methodist Healthcare in Memphis. He had faculty appointments at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.

Mr. Ashby has held numerous offices in professional organizations including the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Tennessee Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Mr. Ashby served on the ASHP Commission on Credentialing and was ASHP President and Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2004.

He has been recognized as a Fellow of ASHP and as Michigan Pharmacist of the Year and has been awarded the Wayne State University Distinguished Alumni Award, the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists Board of Directors Award (for "significant, consistent and ongoing contributions to the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists"), and the Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists President's Award ("in appreciation of significant, unselfish service to the Association"). Mr. Ashby is the 2010 recipient of the ASHP Distinguished Leadership Award in Health-System Pharmacy Practice, presented to "recognize individuals who have achieved excellence in health-system pharmacy practice leadership having led progressive improvements in pharmacy services within specific U.S. hospitals or health systems."

Mr. Ashby has published numerous articles and made over 100 presentations on a variety of topics. He is most proud to have served as a preceptor for more than 165 pharmacy residents. Dan lives in Baltimore with his wife, Barbara, and golden retriever, Gracie.
